Why I Build Boards

I have been fascinated by how surfers interact with waves and the boards they choose to surf them on since 1985. Equally, I'm fascinated by the folks who made these surfboards, the differences and overlaps in what they made and why they chose specific designs and features.

The surf craft I build are aimed at expanding our experience in and on the waves. Some of these boards may seem at first glance outside of the box, but all have benefits that may not be available to the general public.

What I offer to the folks that I make boards for is a collaboration between me as a board builder / designer / surfer and the person who is going to be surfing it. Some of the common targets we are aiming for in these collaborations are going faster on waves, accessing parts of the wave less travelled and new lines, turning and manoeuvring, catching more waves and exploring new feelings and sensations in waves.

Each board is built by hand from start to finish - from cutting the blank, shaping and lamination... it all goes down in a humble, functional set up at the back of our cottage. The shapes I offer have evolved to be an alternative to what's readily available to most folk.
